Our Great High Priest

By Ryan Dawson

Leviticus is challenging!  I have been working through a plan to read the Bible again this year and I’m currently in Leviticus, getting my fill of blood sacrifices.  As challenging as this is in some regard, every part of Scripture has profound value, and the book of Leviticus stands as a testament to the meticulous regulations and sacrificial systems instituted for atonement, so we can be brought back into a right relationship with God.  These rites, though divinely ordained, underscore the impossible chasm between our holy God and His people, necessitating the continuous offerings to address sin.  As I read about sacrifice upon sacrifice, and the tireless work of the priests, I am more and more grateful for Jesus!

Jesus Christ is our eternal High Priest, as portrayed in Hebrews 7:26-28. Unlike the priests of old, who were plagued by their own weaknesses and required to offer sacrifices daily—first for their own sins and then for those of the people—Jesus stands apart.

Jesus “is the kind of high priest we need because he is holy and blameless, unstained by sin. He has been set apart from sinners and has been given the highest place of honour in heaven.” (Hebrews 7:26 NLT).   Christ’s singular, selfless sacrifice on the cross was not a recurring ritual but a definitive act, accomplished  “once for all when he offered himself as the sacrifice for the people’s sins."  (Hebrews 7:27 NLT).

This profound shift from the repetitive sacrifices of Leviticus to the singular, all-sufficient sacrifice of Christ illuminates the boundless grace lavished upon us as believers. No longer are we tethered to the relentless cycle of offerings; instead, we are invited into a transformative relationship with God through Jesus, made possible by grace through faith for Jesus “is able, once and forever, to save those who come to God through him. He lives forever to intercede with God on their behalf.”  (Hebrews 7:25 NLT).

In embracing Jesus as our High Priest through faith, we find the culmination of God's redemptive plan—a plan that transcends the shadows of the old covenant and brings us into the glorious light of His grace.  Take a moment right now to reflect on this amazing reality and to thank God for His grace.  With a heart full of wonder and gratitude, draw near to the throne of grace, rejoicing in the perfect and eternal atonement secured for you by Christ alone.

Heavenly Father, I humbly come before You with a heart full of gratitude for the gift of Your Son, Jesus Christ, my eternal High Priest.  Thank You that through His perfect sacrifice, offered once for all, I am redeemed and I can draw near to You with confidence. Thank You for Your boundless grace and the assurance of salvation through Jesus Christ, in whose name I pray. Amen

God has been so good to us—so rest in His grace today!
