Celebrating Canada Day
By Ryan Dawson
Canada Day is a time for celebration—a day we give thanks for our nation, the freedoms we enjoy, and the incredible National Capital Region we get to live in. As followers of Jesus, it’s also a beautiful opportunity to show love in action, and have redemptive conversations, right where we live.
This year, Sequoia is excited to once again serve at the Barrhaven Canada Day Festival, and we want you to be part of it! Whether it’s a warm smile, a helping hand, sharing treats, or simply being present, every act of service points people to the heart of Christ. Jesus said: “For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.” Mark 10:45
As a church, we follow the example of our Servant King. Canada Day gives us the perfect chance to live this out—to love our neighbours, bless families, and bring light into everyday spaces. This is how we build bridges to Jesus in our city.
This year, Sequoia will be blessing the community with:
• A parent/baby rest area – a quiet, shaded space for little ones and caregivers.
• Treats from the Sequoia Fun Cruiser – sharing joy and free snacks with those in the festival.
• Canada Day temporary tattoos – fun for kids and families.
• A family bathroom – practical hospitality for young families.
• Garbage pick-up throughout the day – caring for the space and people with excellence.
Whether you're handing out treats, picking up garbage, welcoming tired parents, or simply offering a friendly word, you are serving Jesus in a tangible way. “Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:16
Let’s not just celebrate Canada Day—let’s trust God to use it for His good purposes, as we help people take steps towards Christ. Sign up to serve using the Sequoia app or website, bring a friend, and wear your red and white. Together, we can be a faithful presence in our city. Happy Canada Day, Sequoia!
