Seeing Life in the Light of Christ
By Ryan Dawson
Recently, Vanessa and I had the joy of returning to the Netherlands to visit family and spend a few days exploring the beautiful city of Amsterdam. We wandered canals, enjoyed little cafés, and soaked in the history and beauty of the city. One of the highlights for us was visiting the Van Gogh Museum.
Standing in front of the paintings of Vincent van Gogh was deeply moving. Pictures in books or online simply cannot capture the texture, colour, and life of his work. One thing that especially struck me was the way Van Gogh used light. Through his brush strokes, ordinary scenes seemed to glow with warmth and beauty. Fields, skies, trees, and even simple rooms came alive because of how he captured the light.
It reminded me of a simple but profound truth: Light allows us to truly see beauty.
And spiritually, that is exactly what Jesus does for us.
Jesus said: “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.” — John 8:12
Without Christ, we can spend much of life stumbling in the dark—confused about purpose, identity, hope, and even love itself. But when the light of Jesus shines into our hearts, we begin to see life as it was meant to be. We begin to see God’s grace in ordinary moments. We begin to recognize beauty where we once overlooked it. We begin to understand what truly matters.
C. S. Lewis once wrote: “I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.”
That’s exactly it. Christ doesn’t simply give us one more thing to look at—He changes the way we see everything.
As we focus our lives on Jesus, His light begins to fill us. His grace softens us. His love reshapes us. His presence changes the atmosphere around us. And over time, we begin reflecting His beauty to others.
The world desperately needs people who reflect the light of Christ:
• in their homes,
• in their workplaces,
• in their friendships,
• in moments of suffering,
• and in everyday acts of kindness and faithfulness.
Like Van Gogh using light to reveal beauty on a canvas, followers of Jesus are called to reflect the beauty of God into the world around them.
And here’s the encouraging part: These kinds of lives leave a legacy.
Long after a conversation, a prayer, an act of compassion, or a faithful example, the beauty of Christ continues to touch people. Generation after generation can be shaped by a life that reflected the light well.
My prayer for all of us is simple:
May we keep our eyes fixed on Jesus.
May His light fill our hearts more deeply each day.
And may the beauty of Christ shine through us in such a way that others are drawn to Him.
Blessings, Ryan
