Seeking God Together in Prayer
By Ryan Dawson
“My House shall be called a House of Prayer for all nations” (Mark 11:17). These are the words of Jesus when he arrived at the Temple in Jerusalem and saw the chaotic market scene in the Court of the Gentiles (Nations). Jesus expects His people and His church to pray and to be a place where people can seek and meet with God. At Sequoia we are seeking to grow in prayer both corporately and individually. In the past, we have been a church that “prays”, but we want to become a “church OF prayer”. We want to see prayer, which reveals our dependency on God, as the foundation of the ministry of our church.
Over the past three weeks, we have been highlighting the importance of prayer in our ReVision sermon series. Back in January, we launched our first All Church Prayer Summit, and we saw over 50 people join us to pray for one another and our church family. We plan to hold three more All Church Prayer Summits in 2024 (April, June, and October), and we hope to see a growing contingent. We have also been encouraging people to join us for our Tuesday Zoom Prayer Call from 7:30-8:30pm, and we have been seeing some new faces which is very encouraging. Everyone is welcome to join us and there is no pressure to pray out loud if you are not ready to do so. We have even taken some time in our services to pray for one another as we trust the Lord to “teach us to pray” as a people.
Because prayer is so important we have also initiated our Prayer Starts for Sunday morning at Ottawa Christian School. We invite you to join us for our Prayer Starts in the Library each Sunday from 8:30-8:40am, where we will pray for our services. People will be free to pray as the Lord leads, as we petition the Lord for the various aspects of our Sunday services (Kids Min, Worship, the Message, Hospitality, Tech, Welcome etc). This is a great opportunity to join with those serving that day to pray for God to work powerfully in our midst.
We know that unless the Lord builds the house we labour in vain, so we are desperate for God to show up. We gather to pray, because our prayer is our “Declaration of Dependence” on God, and "Prayer is our greater work!" So, we invite you to join us as we pray together each Sunday morning.
We believe that God responds to the prayers of His people, so we are excited to see how the Lord will move as we pray together in various ways. I look forward to praying with you!
Blessings, Ryan
