Radically Ordinary Hospitality Challenge

“The Son of Man came eating and drinking” -Matthew 11:19

Jesus came to seek and to save the lost. How did he do it? Most of the time, he did it by eating and drinking. He did it through radically ordinary hospitality.

Radically ordinary hospitality is what Rosaria Butterfield describes as using what you have to “make strangers neighbours, and neighbours family of God.”

We believe that using what we have in radically ordinary ways to bless other people is one of the main ways that we can show the love of Christ to the people in our lives.

So, for the month of July, we are inviting you to partake in the Radically Ordinary Hospitality Challenge over the course of 30 days.

Our desire is to open our hearts and our homes to the people around us, to help them sense the tangible love of God. As Paul told the church in Thessalonica, "We loved you so much that we shared with you not only God’s Good News but our own lives, too." -1 Thessalonians 2:8

These radically ordinary challenges will help you to share your own life, through your home, your presence, and your love, with the people in your life. These can be done as an individual, as a family, or even as an Impact Community.

Each week during the month of July, there will be 2 unique challenges to help us welcome people as Jesus did – by eating and drinking. The goal is not that you would do them all (although you can if you’d like), but to choose one challenge each week and allow God to lead you in how you live it out. The intention is not to make something extravagant, but to allow God to use something very ordinary in a radical way.

The radically ordinary challenges for each week can be found below.

July 1-7:
  • Take an acquaintance for coffee.
  • Invite a friend or colleague over to your house (preferably somebody who hasn’t been to your house in the last 3 months).
July 8-14:
  • Invite friends from church for a BBQ or pizza night.
  • Write a hand-written letter to a friend you haven’t talked to in a while. Let them know you are praying for them.
July 15-21:
  • Invite the neighbourhood kids (and parents if you’d like) to your house for a games night or a meal.
  • Invite someone to participate with you in a hobby you enjoy.
July 22-28:
  • Invite somebody new to the church BBQ & baptism service (Sunday July 28).
  • Invite a neighbour(s) to join you for a meal (in or out).

May God bless you and may His Spirit be with you as you eat and drink, in radically ordinary ways.
