Setting Our Hearts on Heaven

By Ryan Dawson

Have you ever wondered about the reality of Heaven?  The Apostle Paul in his letter to the Church of Colossae writes…

"Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory."  Colossians 3:1-4 (NIV)

This is such a helpful word for us in these days.  Life is often filled with distractions, worries, fears, and a pull toward things that are temporary.  It’s easy to get caught up in the demands of daily life—our jobs, relationships, struggles, and pursuits.  But in this passage, the Apostle Paul invites us to refocus our hearts and minds on something eternal: Heaven.

Paul tells us to “set your hearts on things above,” reminding us that as believers, we’ve been raised with Christ.  This means our identity is no longer tied to the passing things of this world but to the eternal realities of God’s Kingdom.  When we intentionally fix our thoughts on Heaven, it changes how we live here on earth.

Thinking about Heaven isn’t about escapism or ignoring the challenges we face in life.  Instead, it’s about gaining perspective.  When we understand that our life is “hidden with Christ in God,” we are reminded that there’s a bigger story at work—one where God is preparing a glorious future for us.  This truth should impact our daily choices, infusing our lives with hope, joy, and purpose.

As you go through your day, remember that this world is not your final home.  The struggles you face, the temptations that try to pull you down, and even the accomplishments you celebrate—all are temporary.  Heaven and the New Earth is your true destination, and Christ is your life.  Keeping your mind on Heaven reminds you that no matter what happens here, your future is secure, and you will one day appear with Christ in glory.

Let this truth encourage you today.  When life feels overwhelming, take a moment to set your heart on things above.  Let the hope of Heaven shape your attitudes and actions, allowing you to live with peace and purpose, knowing that you are part of something eternal.  And I also want to encourage you to join us this Sunday as we launch our new sermon series The Hope of Heaven.  Together we will be challenged and encouraged as we “set our hearts on things above!”

Blessings, Ryan

Prayer:
Lord, thank You for the promise of Heaven and the hope that comes from knowing our life is hidden with Christ in You. Help us to set our hearts and minds on things above, to live with an eternal perspective, and to walk in the peace and joy that come from knowing our future is secure in You. Amen.
